How we tested
We ran the same battery on every service: a 14-day measurement window across nodes in London, Frankfurt, Singapore, São Paulo and Toronto. Speed tests used a 1 Gbps line and were repeated four times per location, three times a day. Streaming was tested on five regional catalogues. We also independently verified each provider's most recent third-party audit, where one existed. Business VPNs were additionally evaluated for SSO/SCIM support, dedicated IP availability, audit logs, device posture checks and admin-console UX with a 25-seat trial deployment.
Best business VPNs of 2026
For distributed teams, a business VPN is no longer a glorified site-to-site tunnel — it's an identity-aware access layer. The eleven services below all support SSO at minimum; the better ones add device posture, ZTNA-style application gating, and granular audit logs that satisfy SOC 2 and ISO 27001 evidence requirements.

Best Chrome VPN extensions: free, secure & lightweight
If you don't need a system-wide tunnel, a Chrome VPN extension is the fastest way to add private browsing to a single tab. A good browser VPN encrypts internet traffic at the browser level, hides your IP in Chrome and lets you bypass geo blocking on streaming sites — all without affecting other apps. Below are the best VPN extensions for Chrome we tested in 2026, picked across three priorities: free secure VPN, fast VPN for Chrome, and best VPN extension for privacy.
Proton VPN — best free VPN Chrome extension
The only credible free secure VPN add-on with no data cap, AES-256 (and ChaCha20 over WireGuard), Swiss jurisdiction and an open-source codebase. Install secure VPN for Chrome in two clicks — no account upgrade nag.
Windscribe — fast VPN extension install, no account needed
A genuinely VPN no account experience: enter an email, get 10 GB/month. The Chrome VPN plugin includes R.O.B.E.R.T. for ad/tracker blocking and a split-personality browser fingerprint protector.
NordVPN — best VPN for Chrome (premium)
The fastest VPN Chrome extension we tested in 2026. WebRTC leak protection on by default, CyberSec malware filter, and a one-click "private VPN Chrome" toggle. Shares a subscription with the desktop app.
Surfshark — fast VPN Chrome with CleanWeb
A lightweight VPN Chrome plugin under 4 MB. Fast VPN for Chrome with built-in ad and malware blocking, cookie pop-up auto-dismiss, and per-site VPN add to Chrome rules.
TunnelBear — simple VPN for Chrome browser
The friendliest install: download VPN extension Chrome, click the bear, you're tunneled. 2 GB free per month and an annual third-party security audit — easy VPN setup with nothing to configure.
Hoxx / Browsec / Hotspot Shield — popular free VPN extension picks
Three more free VPN Chrome extension options worth knowing. Use them as throwaway browser VPN add-ons, not as your primary online privacy VPN — none have published a recent independent audit.
How to install a VPN extension in Chrome
- Open the Chrome Web Store and search for the VPN extension by name (e.g. "Proton VPN", "NordVPN" or "Windscribe").
- Click Add to Chrome — this is the only legitimate way to VPN add to Chrome. Do not install secure VPN for Chrome from random ZIP files.
- Pin the icon to the toolbar, sign in (or skip if it's a VPN no account extension), and pick a country.
- Verify it's working: visit an IP-check page. If your IP changed, your secure browser traffic is now flowing through the VPN.
- Optional: enable WebRTC leak protection in the extension's settings to fully hide IP in Chrome.
What a Chrome VPN extension actually does (and doesn't)
A Chrome VPN extension is a proxy with TLS — not a full system VPN. It encrypts your browser traffic, helps with public Wi-Fi VPN scenarios, lets you change IP address per browser profile, and is enough for unblock websites Chrome use cases like bypass geo blocking on news sites or YouTube. It will not tunnel traffic from other apps (Slack, Spotify, your torrent client). For full-device WiFi security VPN, install the desktop client instead.
"We migrated a 40-person remote team from a self-hosted OpenVPN gateway to NordLayer over six months. The WireGuard rollout cut session reconnect tickets by about 80%, and SCIM removed the worst part of offboarding."
— K. Onuoha, infrastructure lead, distributed agency in Lagos
How to pick the right VPN for you
- Business / remote team: start with NordLayer or Twingate; pick Tailscale if you want zero infrastructure to run; pick Perimeter 81 if you need full SASE.
- Personal privacy first: Mullvad VPN or Proton VPN — both audited, both accept anonymous payment, both open-source on the client side.
- Streaming first: NordVPN, ExpressVPN or Surfshark — top three for unblocking and consistent geo-routing.
- Torrenting first: Private Internet Access — port forwarding, P2P-friendly servers and unlimited devices.
- Free tier: Proton VPN for full-device protection; TunnelBear or Windscribe for a free VPN Chrome extension you can use without an account.
- Browser only: a secure VPN extension is enough if you only need to encrypt internet traffic in Chrome, hide my IP and bypass geo blocking on websites — pair with a public WiFi VPN on mobile.
The bottom line
For business teams, NordLayer and Twingate are the two we'd shortlist by default in 2026; Tailscale is the best free starting point. For personal use, NordVPN and ExpressVPN trade the top spot depending on region, with Mullvad as the privacy-purist pick and Proton VPN as the only free VPN we can recommend without caveats. For a fast VPN extension install in Chrome, start with Proton VPN's free secure VPN — it's the cleanest browser VPN we tested.
